Common questions
At what income do I start repaying HECS in 2026-27?
Compulsory repayments start once your repayment income passes $69,528. Below that, nothing is compulsory, though you can always make voluntary repayments.
Is the repayment on my whole income or just the amount over the threshold?
Under the 2026-27 marginal system, it is charged on the income above each threshold — 15c per dollar over $69,528, then 17c over $129,717 — capped at 10% of your total repayment income.
Does salary sacrifice change my repayment?
Yes. Reportable super contributions are added back when working out repayment income, so salary sacrificing can slightly increase your compulsory HECS repayment even though it lowers your taxable income.
How is my HELP debt indexed?
Your outstanding balance is indexed once a year to keep pace with inflation, now tied to the lower of CPI or the Wage Price Index. This tool estimates time-to-clear before indexation, so treat it as a guide.
